Athens, post 1874View of the Acropolis, albumen print. This early print, depicts the Propylaea without the Frankish tower. This would date the image sometime after 1874, when the tower was demolished. Photographer unknown. This print, with some remnants of adhesive still evident on the reverse, may have been a part of a photographic album. On the back it reads ‘Athens and Amphitheatre of Acropolis’. In 1869 American photographer William J. Stillman photographed the site, providing a detailed account of the tower.[Stillman, William James, 1870, The Acropolis of Athens: Illustrated Picturesquely and Architecturally in Photographs, (London: F.S.
